When it comes to the nations favourite heroes James Bond rising from the water in a pair of trunks surely has to be up there in the top 10 heroic visions at least, doesn’t he? The guy in the pic certainly thinks so (apologies to all Bond addicts hoping to see an actual pic of Bond – hope this will suffice for now). But whilst the iconic term ‘007’ is now part of our English language, I started to wonder… where did it come from? Our friend ‘Wiki’ states that Rudyard Kipling wrote a short story entitled “.007: The Story of an American Locomotive” around the time when a young Fleming would have been influenced by such pieces of writing, but no evidence backs this up. There’s also an interesting, albeit utterly useless fact – that 7 authors have written Bond novels that have been published and made into films.

So, intrigued as to where the relevance of this number originates from, I took a brief delve into the number 7 – or as we’re likely to hear on a Saturday night around this time of year “severrrrn”.

I was surprised (and a tad bored by the end if I’m honest as there was so much information) to discover in just a few seconds that there are quite literally loads of things that make this number special. Here’s just few…

  • 7/7/1777 marks the Battle of Hubbardton in the American Revolutionary War – the only battle of the war of independence that was fought in Vermont
  • The number of chakras we are believed to have in our bodies is… 7
  • There are 7 wonders of the ancient world
  • There are 7 continents in the world
  • There are 7 colors of the rainbow
  • There are also 7 basic musical notes
  • A ladybird most commonly has 7 spots
  • A poll in the Daily Mail this year of 30,000 people revealed 7 is overwhelmingly our favourite number

(Jen stops to take a breath…)

  • Scientists believe that humans can only cognate up to 7 things in any given moment in time
  • Mammals have 7 external orifices
  • Enid Blyton’s novels were about the ‘Secret 7’
  • In J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter Series, Ginny Weasley is the seventh child of the Weasley family. Harry potter was born in the 7th month of the year. 7 is the number on the back of his Quidditch robes. Wizarding students have to complete 7 years of school at Hogwarts. The chest in which Professor Moody was hidden had 7 locks.
  • 7 has the highest probability of occurring as an addition when rolling dice
  • The 7 year itch is a common factor in marriage break ups.
GOOD GRIEF. So ok the number 7 is popular – just not as much as Bond! Though judging by comments made by the people I know who’ve seen the latest Bond movie – “severrrn” is proving more popular – in the dancing arena at least. I can’t comment as I’ve not seen Spectre, I’d rather watch a rumba any day.
So I’ll leave you with this… apparently people with the number 7 in their date of birth are ‘more inclined towards the abstract and have an aptitude for art. Mostly, they are introverts.‘ As a creative person this puzzles me as the number 7 has never been a factor in my life or career, and I’m a solid creative person through and through, however… I am always striving for that elusive 10.
